Here is your chance to experience the unforgettable – a guided walk to a hilltop that is New Zealand’s claim to the Longest Place Name in the World. The hill where Tamatea played his flute in lament of a loved brother who was killed in a battle, Tamatea was a noted Chief, and Ancestor of many Porangahau families. Your guides are his descendants.

Your walk will take you on a steady climb along a dirt track through a typical working farm. You will pass through paddocks of sheep and cattle, and return through stands of cool, leafy bush resonant with native bird song.

En-route your guide will bring history to life with tales of the areas early Maori people. In New Zealand, Maori are regarded as Tangata Whenua. The First People.

Reach the top and stunning panoramic views of hills and coast are your reward – drink them in as you think of Tamatea, and hear the haunting notes of his flute, the koauau.
