Waikouaiti River and Estuary

Location

The Waikouaiti River is found to the north of Dunedin in Otago, New Zealand. It flows to the Pacific Ocean at Karitane, close to the town of Waikouaiti.

The Waikouaiti River is the Largest in East Otago.

Description

The beautiful Waikouaiti river is popular for whitebaiting, eeling, fishing, kayaking, swimming and birdwatching. In the summer months families enjoy searching for cockles in the sand at the river mouth or searching for crabs. There is a great view of Sir Truby King’s historic homestead from the river mouth. The local river care group have planted hundreds of natives along the bank.
