Hawkesbury Lagoon and Wild Life Refuge
- Location
- Drive on SH1 north to Waikouaiti. After entering the town take the third road on the left, Beach Road. Drive over the railway lines turning left into Stewart Street.
- Description
- The Lagoon is semi-tidal lagoon with more than 26 species of birds. Black swans now breed there along with Mallards, Paradise and Shell duck, NZ Shoveler and many more nest at the side of the lake. Spoon bills have been seen on the lagoon of recent years in groups of 30 or 40. It is a lovely walk across the causeway which has been planted with NZ Natives and out along the beach.
