Description

A fascinating walk around the Bannockburn Diggings near Cromwell will lead you to Stewart Town, where the crumbling remains of sun-dried brick buildings, old water races, dams and orchards are all that remains from the activities of fifty years of mining. The slopes sluiced in the thirsty search for alluvial gold are now home to a burgeoning wine industry. The walk, about one hour's round trip, is marked from Felton Road, Bannockburn.

This walk is well marked with information panels at points of interest. From the car park the walk is up a gully through gravel cliffs to the Menzies Dam. There are orchards and hut sites marking the site of Stewart town. Panormaic views over Cromwell Basin from up here. The track from Stewart Town leads to Pipeclay Gully. Past the old blacksmith’s shop, across Pipeclay Terrace and back to the car park.

There are two other walk options:

Loop walk from Stewart Town to Bannockburn village along Hall Road crossing over Pipeclay Gully. Wine tasting is available in Felton Road.

Long Gully Bluffs Conservatjion Area (DOC) starts at Stewart Town. It is a 3-4 hr return walk and easy to medium level.
