Lowburn to Cardrona Pack Track
- Location
Drive on SH 6 from Cromwell north for 4 km. Turn left into Lowburn Valley Road and right into Swann Road. The start of the walk is well signposted under Pine trees by a gate to a woolshed. At the Cardrona end the walk is signposted just over the river at the start of the Waiorau skifield/snowpark access road. The packtrack is a public road with no access restrictions.
- Description
Starting the walk from the Lowburn end cross the bridge and zigzag on a 4WD track up Packspur to the top of the Pisa Range crossing several water races on the way. Panoramic views can be enjoyed from the crest of the hill.
Walk north past the first track junction for 700 m, then over a stile. Turn left on another 4WD track past sheepyards to McMillan’s Hut at the head of Skeleton Stream. Contact Mt Pisa Station (03 445 1223) for permission to use the hut. Leave the hut and cross Skeleton Stream and the Westmoreland Race to pick up the packtrack. This is followed through several branches of the headwaters of Mitre Creek. Eventually you join the 4WD track.
Starting from the Cardrona end follow the 4WD track down a spur and then a poled fenceline to the Roaring Meg stream to the Meg Hut. Leave the hut on another 4WD track that climbs very steeply up to Tuohys Saddle and the junction with the Roaring Meg-Cardrona walk. This track continues down Tuohys Gully around farm buildings at the foot of the hill and out to Waiorau skifield access road.
