Bendigo Historic Reserve Walk

- Bendigo is on the western side of Central Otago's Dunstan Mountains. Take SH8 from Cromwell for 14 km turning right into the Bendigo Loop road. Follow this for 3.5km to Bendigo town. Follow the gravel road up the hill for about 3.5km past an old school and Logantown to a car park at the site of Welshtown where there are stone huts and interpretative panels. This walk is within a DOC historic reserve with no access restrictions.
- Description
This is a 2 hr round trip through an area of quartz reef mining offering excellent views over the Clutha Valley.
Follow the cart track from Welshtown to No 2 shaft. Follow the cart road past shafts and stone hut sites to the Matilda Battery site. Continue down a gully to the main access road. Turn right and walk to the site of Logantown which was the main settlement of the Bendigo goldfield. Continue on this track to Aurora Creek. Turn right and follow up the creek to the Lucknow Battery. The pegged track climbs up to a ridgeline to the east of the creek. Note the stone hut ruins, shafts and mullock heaps. Walk down on the stone embankment to the Aurora Battery crossing Aurora Creek. Take the track out of Aurora Creek and follow the old water race to the ruins of Pengelly’s Hotel, across Swipers Creek to Welshtown car park.
