Graves Track

Location
Access to the track is through the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony main entrance at the end of Waterfront Road on the south side of the harbour.
Description

The first part of Graves Track stretches from the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony to Boatman's Harbour. Fur seals often lie near the track entrance, so please proceed carefully. Along the track are magnificent views across Oamaru Harbour and out to sea. The WWII Oamaru Coast Defence Camp, well worth exploring, is on the top of Cape Wanbrow; a path to it heads up the hill part way along the track. Spotted Shags nest in the cliff above Boatman's Harbour; these birds rest on the wharves in the main harbour during the day. At Boatman's Harbour are rare pillow lava columns from an under-sea volcano which erupted 40-50 million years ago. At that time Oamaru was up to 60 metres under the ocean surface.

The second part of Graves Track can be accessed only during low tide. From Boatman's Harbour the track goes around a headland and down to the water's edge.

Distance: 2km to Bushy Beach – return about 45mins by road back to penguin colony.
