Kaka Point & the Nuggets
- Location
- Accessible from the Balclutha/Owaka highway (SH92), south of Telford Polytechnic in South Otago.
- Description
Awakiki Track (40 min return)
Turn right (signposted) off the Balclutha/Owaka highway, south of Telford Polytechnic, on to Awakiki Road. Awakiki Bush Scenic Reserve is an outstanding example of lowland totara forest. There is foot access from the road through neighbouring farm land to the loop track through the reserve.
Kaka Point Bush Walk (30 min loop track)
There are two signposted, entrance/exit points, both off Marine Terrace. Another access track links the loop track off Rata Street. This is an easy bush walk in the Kaka Point Scenic Reserve that gives the impression that it’s very remote, but is almost within the township of Kaka Point.
Nugget Point/TokataNugget Point/Toaka Track (10 – 20 min return)
Carry on along the coast road from Kaka Point to the lighthouse car park. The well maintained pathway suits all ages and leads to a viewing platform beside the lighthouse – great seascapes. The area is rich in wildlife; several seabird species nest on the rock stacks. This is also the only place on mainland New Zealand where three sea mammal species, New Zealand fur seal, New Zealand sea lion and elephant seals all breed.
Roaring Bay ( 20 min return)
The car park is one kilometre before the Nuggets, on the same road. Several species breed in and around the 47-hectare reserve. Yellow-eyed penguins/höiho can be viewed from the hide when they come ashore in the late afternoon. Sea lions can be seen on the beach.
