Albert Burn Hut track

Location
The Albert Burn is a remote valley, with access by boat across Lake Wanaka or via the ‘cattle track’ from the Makarora River mouth. From the mouth of the Albert Burn follow the farmed river flats into the gorge; please don’t disturb livestock.
Description

The first section, the river gorge, means 'boulder hopping', but this is only possible when the river is normal. The track leaves the river on the true right, and climbs above the gorge through beech forest to a very large river flat. From here there is no marked track. Cross the river at the high end of the flat to reach the six-bunk hut. This is at the western end, on a small terrace, set well back from the river; don’t miss it!

There’s also a good three – to four-hour trip from here to the top flat.
