Description

Walk amongst native beech forest along a 45 min walking track that follows the tranquil Granity Stream. You will discover historic tramlines and bridges used by early loggers.

In a large clearing you will discover a steam locomotive (a 1902 Johnston "A" class engine named Black Maria) that was originally used for hauling logs and timber. It was built by Johnston & Sons and is one of only two of its kind left in New Zealand. It was decommissioned in 1954 and there are plans to restore it in the near future.

The loop track starts at the bottom of the clearing where there are concrete piers, parts of the old tramline bridge and old sleepers.
