Highway 99, just southeast of Orepuki.
From Tuatapere, watch for the sign for Monkey Island just past Orepuki. From Riverton, watch for the signs where Highway 99 reaches Te Waewae Bay.
Monkey Island is a great stopping place for a picnic, for the kids to play on the beach or for sightseeing along the Southern Scenic Route.
It is known by Ngai Tahu as Te Puka o Takitimu, or the anchor stone of the legendary Takitimu waka/canoe that was wrecked in Te Waewae Bay.
At low tide, Monkey Island can be reached by foot. A stairway leads to the top of the island, where there is a great view of the bay and the mountains of Fiordland.
Camping, picnic and toilet facilities are available.
