Waitutu River to Big River route - South Coast track
- Location
The Waitutu Forest forms part of Te Wahipounamu (south-west New Zealand) World Heritage Area. It is situated in south-west Southland and is signposted from Tuatapere.
From Tuatapere turn onto Papatōtara Road and follow the signs to Bluecliffs Beach. The first 21 kilometres are sealed and the remaining seven kilometres are gravel road of a good standard. Cars can be left in the car park (at the owner's risk), signposted in front of the Rarakau Station homestead, 150 metres past the track entrance.
- Description
Much of the track to Big River follows the old telephone line which linked Puysegur Point to Ōrepuki. There are suspension bridges over the Grant Burn and Aan River. This section of track is through conservation land and hunting with a permit is welcomed.
It is possible to travel from Waitutu Hut to Prices Harbour along the coast. However, extreme care should be taken with the tides. Big River was previously the boundary between Waitutu Forest and Fiordland National Park.
