Central Otago Rail Trail

Location

State Highway 85, Wedderburn, Central Otago.
Visit www.wedderburn.net.nz for a map.

Description

The Rail Trail is 150kms – with Wedderburn being the highest point of the trail and is voted 16th most popular of 101 Must Dos for Kiwis.

This year-round cycling and walking trail is a public reserve owned by the people of New Zealand. There’s no cost for using it, although donations can be made to the Trust at most station sites. Because the trail follows an old railway line, hills are not steep, making it accessible to most ages and those with a modicum of fitness. There’s so much to enjoy, it’s wise to allow at least four days to cycle its full length, a good few days more if you’re walking.

We do encourage you to spend time exploring www.otagocentralrailtrail.co.nz. The better prepared and informed you are, the better your experience will be.

A great place to stay while you are in the region isThe Lodge & Cottages Wedderburn. You can stay for 1, 2, or more nights & walk either way on the rail trail – returning to wedderburn each night or going on to the next township. There is top quality accommodation, food & people along the way & is great fun for a group of walkers.
