Sharlands Creek - Maitai Valley
- Location
- Drive through the Maitai Valley turning left into Sharland Creek Road, past the information board and gate. Stay on Sharlands Creek Road. 1.5km further on you will see a sign on the left for all three tracks.
- Description
There are four tracks in this area. This walk covers three of them: Sharlands Creek, Supplejack and Rimu.
Not recommended after rainfall. Might be best to contact Action Forest Management on 544 8541 before you depart to ensure all roads are open.
Follow the walking track to an intersection and take a left turn up Supplejack Trail, wnding up the hill through native bush where you can enjoy the sounds of wood pigeons and bellbirds. Past the picnic table and further up the hill the trail emerges onto a 4WD track.
Cross over to take the track to the lookout. This is about 20 minutes return and well worth the climb for the wonderful views of the port, city hills, Richmond, Waimea Plains, Moutere Hills and Mount Arthur Range. Retrace your steps to the 4WD track noting Dun Mountain and The Doubles.
Follow the Rimu Trail downhill through the trees. Emerge from the Rimu Trail near the top end of the Sharlands Creek Track where you will find another picnic table next to the creek. Pass the Matai Trail entrance, walking on through the forest where the track leads you back to the starting point at the lower car park.
