Sir Stanley Whitehead Park
- Location
- Start from Branford Park about 500 m on the left from the start of Maitai Valley Road.
- Description
This is a historic walk offering panoramic views of Nelson City and Tasman Bay. The park is named after Sir Stanley Whitehead, a National MP in Nelson from 1957-76. This walk is for the fit and agile.
Take the track on the left that is signposted 'Centre of NZ'. Follow the signs up the Botanical Hill to the summit. From here take the asphalt path on the right of the green park bench and take the third option on your left which is signposted 'Sir Stanley Whitehead Park'.
Climb up the gravel track to the kissing gate and follow the track on around the eastern hills with great views of the port. Go through another gate about 500m along the track and along to a third gate where there is a seat to rest. About 50m past this point take the track to the left signposted 'to Atawhai Drive' – this track will bring you out at some houses on Whitehead Place where you can continue down through Walters Bluff subdivision on to Atawhai Drive opposite Founders Park.
At Atawhai Drive you can choose to visit Miyazu Gardens or take in Founders Heritage Park. Make your way back along Atawhai Drive and Milton Street to the Botanics. Cross the field to take the right track around the southern side of the hill which will return you to Matai Valley. Turn left here and walk back to the start point at Brandford Park.
