- This walk starts from Anzac Park on the corner of Halifax and Rutherford Streets.
- Description
This walk in the Washington Valley highlights some of Nelson’s history and takes you through Anzac and Pioneers parks. Other features of the walk include: Globe Tavern (1870s), Avenue of Phoenix palms in Anzac Park and Pioneer Cottage, the oldest house in Hastings Street.
At the western end of Anzac Park cross the Globe Tavern (built in 1870s), cross St Vincent Street and turn right into Hastings Street. Pass Pioneers Park an on to Washington Road. At the intersection of Hastings Street and Washington Road you will find the weeping elm, and across the road at No.35 is Pioneer Cottage, the oldest house in the street.
Follow Washington Road (taking the steps on the hill section) up to the crossroads and turn left up Princes Drive. At the top its time to have a rest and admire the views across Nelson.
Turn left from the top of Princes Drive into Quebec Road. Find the sign directing you to the Arrow Street walkway and follow this path. At the bottom turn right and take Quebec Road round to Watson Street walkway (where you will find a seat and steps down the first section), then follow a concrete drive and veer left at No.17 down to Watson Street. Turn right and cross over to Pioneers Park. A paved pathway follows the perimeter of the park to the right of the playground and takes you back to Hastings Street and Anzac Park.
