Jimmy Lee Creek Loop
- Location
- Start the walk beside Number 273 Hill Street, in Richmond.
- Description
This tramp allows you to enjoy some beautiful native bush areas without having to travel far. For the fit, it offers a climb to the top resulting in spectacular views. This is one for the fitter and you will need sturdy shoes, particularly in the winter months when the track can be slippery and muddy.
This walk meanders alongside the Jimmy Lee Creek up the valley and as it continues alongside the creek you get the impression that you are miles away from the town!
There are lots of native plants alongside the creek now, but older residents tell of a time when the gullies around the Richmond foothills had been almost totally denuded of native plants by wandering cattle. Happily much of this growth has regenerated thanks to the efforts of many voluntary groups working in the areas. The path is similar to one that you would find in a National Park and indeed that’s exactly the feeling you get on this walk, that you are right out in a wilderness area.
Follow the walkway signs along the way. Eventually you come out at the forestry block and turn right and head up the steep path, until you reach the top. Up here the views out across the Waimea Plains and beyond are fantastic.
Take the path to your right and make your way down this steep terrain. At the bottom, follow the walkway signs back through more bush. Eventually you will come out alongside the newer subdivision at the south end of Hill Street.
Then you can make your way back to your starting point on Hill Street.
This somewhat challenging tramp is well worth the effort in terms of views and the wonderful wilderness feel of the track.
