Western Whakatane Coastal Reserve

Location
Located on the coastal strip adjacent to SH 2, extending from Whakatane to Otamarakau. The reserves can be accessed from a number of roads leading off State Highway 2 including Golf Links Rd, Thornton Beach Rd and Walker Rd.
Description

Surveys have found 65 species of birds. Many are wetland species using the estuaries of two rivers and the network of lagoons, streams and dune lakes. Eleven of the 65 are threatened species.

The Rangitaiki River mouth is considered the most important whitebait fishery and the second most important kahawai fishery in the Bay of Plenty/East Cape region.
