Te Urewera

There are numerous entry points. The Upper Waikare River tracks can be reached from points off State Highway 38 (the Murupara-Wairoa road), though the quickest access is via the Waimana Valley, reached from State Highway 2 between Whakatane and Opotiki.
Whakatane River tracks can also be reached via points off State Highway 2 at Taneatua, or from Ruatahuna on State Highway 38.- Description
There are three main valleys to tramp in:
1.The Upper Waikare Valley
2.Whakatane River Valley
3.Waimana Valley TracksOnly for the experienced tramper although there are some walks for those less experienced. Check with your local DOC office.
Te Urewera is an area of varied scenery – rivers, grass flats, steep sided hillsides cut by streams and native vegetation.
There are numerous camping areas and accommodation huts, which have open fires for cooking and bunks with mattresses. A small fee is charged for using the huts.
