Matiri Valley & 1000 Acre Plateau

Location
Matiri Valley is off SH 6, 22 km from Murchison and is a gateway into the Kahurangi National Park.
Description

Kahurangi is one of New Zealand's newest and the second largest national park. At 452,002 hectares it is also one of the largest.

It is a 3 hour walk to Lake Matiri. From there you can do overnight tramps to 1000 Acre Plateau. There are two huts in this area – Poor Pete's Hut and Larrikin Creek Hut.

These rolling tussock grasslands are fringed by steep limestone bluffs, creating a magic tabletop alpine world which houses one of the most dense alpine flora species areas in New Zealand. A wide range of Hebes, Celmisias, Astelias, Dracophyllums, Gentians and many others grace the plateau. Bird sightings may include kea, kaka and falcon.
