Gore Bay and the Cathedrals
- Location
- Drive on highway 1 to Cheviot, and then turn down the signposted Gore Bay Road. The track starts and ends by the Gore Bay batches and is well signposted.
- Description
This is a small interesting reserve with a circuit walking track.
The southern loop wanders up a curious deep cool gravel gully, and then climbs out round through scrub forest to an excellent lookout along the coast. Finally, it winds down another shrub and scrub gully to Gore Bay again. Friendly fantails. "The Cathedrals" are eroded siltstone pillars, which are a typical example of what has come to be known as "badlands" landscape, after the famous American example. They can be seen from the circuit walk but are best viewed from the road that continues from Gore Bay along the coast. Clearly signposted.Facilities: Toilets, cold water, rubbish bins, camping, fishing permitted, tennis court, Dairy and Service Station within 5kms.
