Port Robinson Walkway
- Location
From SH1 take the direction sign to Gore Bay at Domett which also indicates it to be a scenic drive. Once you start descending on the other side of the hill you have reached the Port Robinson/Manuka Bay area. Port Robinson Rd is a further 0.6km past the Manuka Bay turn off.
The alternate route is from Cheviot where you make a right hand turn in the town centre and follow the signs to Gore Bay. At the 9km mark you will have reached the south end of Gore Bay with a steep hill climb up to the Cathedrals viewing spot. Port Robinson Rd is a further 2.3km from the bottom of the hill
- Description
The walkway runs along a coastal strip, passing through spectacular scenery and forested scenic reserves which are close to the eastern and southern limits of a number of plant species and have strong populations of native birds. The headland, about mid-point, provides views both north and south. Near the southern end good views are gained of the river mouth and lagoon, a haven for fishing. The track can be walked from either end. Until recently the track stretched a further 1.5 hours north past Gibson Point to Gore Bay. Safety and maintenance problems mean that this section is no longer maintained as part of the walkway.
Please note that part of the Port Robinson Walkway is closed – any inquiries should be directed to the Department of Conservation's North Canterbury Area Office (03) 371 3706.
‘The Bluff’ tidal part of the walkway is interesting to visit with tidal pools and rock structures. Manuka Bay is a good picnic, sunbathing and swimming spot.
