South Brighton Estuary and Beach Walk
- Location
- Start from the car park at Pleasant Point jetty, turn-off Estuary Road onto Beatty Street.
- Description
Dogs must be leashed beside the estuary.
Short walk option: Walk from the car park along the boardwalk and salt marsh, 20 min return.
This walk covers many landscapes, saltmarsh, conifer forest trails, dune tracks and beach walking. There is a sculpture garden beside Marine Parade, picnic tables, children’s playground and fishing jetty at Pleasant Point, as well as a wonderful viewing area to look at wildlife.
From the car park take the Estuary track through the pine forest. There are a number of seats before you reach the footbridge and boardwalk over the salt marsh. An information panel is situated near the Ebbtide Street car park. Excellent views from here of the estuary.
Continue along Ebbtide Street to the seat. Walk along Caspian Street across Rockinghorse Road (pedestrian island for easy crossing here). Turn left up Marine Parade. Follow the beach trails to the sculpture garden.
From here you can follow the inland dune track or walk on the access track to the beach. Or use a combination of both routes.
Pine trees on the inland dune track are the marker for the short cut down Beatty Street, or continue onto the Te Karoro Karoro Reserve, ‘the seagulls chatter.’ There is a large picnic area, children’s playground and toilets further on beside the South New Brighton Surf Life Saving clubhouse.
After crossing Marine Parade follow Bridge Street past the roundabout to the public reserve. Take the first wide track running alongside the fenceline leading back to the Estuary Track and onto the car park at Pleasant Point.
