Location

Peel Forest Park is situated along the foothills of the Southern Alps by the Rangitata River in the Geraldine District, mid-Canterbury. It is 150km from Christchurch via Highway 1 south through Ashburton, branching off at Ashburton, Hinds or Rangitata. This is well signposted.

There is a visitor centre open 9-5pm just before the forest.

Description

A short distance from Geraldine stands spectacular Peel Forest a popular recreation area for those seeking peace and tranquillity. The canopy of towering podocarps hosts a rich variety of native bush and bird-life underneath, and there are dozens of tracks to explore.

Your choices range from a gentle stroll around Dennistoun Bush or a more adventurous tramp up Little Mt Peel/Hautakerekere. All tracks are signposted and well marked. Any tracks above the bushline should be considered a tramping track.
