Glencoe Walk

Location

This walk is situated at Aoraki/Mount Cook village,
starting from behind the Hermitage Hotel on Terrace Road.

Description

The walk zigzags through totara trees with a ferny understorey, emerging at a lookout near the prominent water tanks above the Hermitage. Walkers are rewarded with a birds-eye view of the village and beyond to the white ice of the Hooker Glacier and Aoraki/Mount Cook. Sunrise and sunset are good times to catch light-play on the mountains.

The park is alive with the most wonderful alpine plants. In summer look for the striking Mount Cook buttercup, the large mountain daisies and watch out for the fearsome wild spaniard or spear grass! The braided riverbed of the Tasman is home to the kakī/black stilt, one of New Zealand's rarest birds.
