Dallington River and Park Walk
- Location
- Start from the car park opposite Avon Park on Avonside Drive
- Description
This walk links Avon Park, Dallington river loop and Woodham Park, one of the prettiest parks in the city with its unique aviaries. The walk covers quiet roadsides, with two crossings of North Road controlled by lights.
Short walk option: from the footbridge: cross the footbridge walking along Locksley Avenue or through Avon Park, both walks 15 mins return approximately.
Starting from the footbridge, walk up river along the grass beside the Avon River. Avon Park has toilets, a children’s playground and large trees. Walk along Avonside Drive till you reach Gloucester Street North at the traffic lights. Cross over turning left a short distance to the lane of Lionel Street.
A pedestrian path leads off Lionel Street to Woodham Park with a paddling pool, aviaries with doves, parakeets and canaries and a children’s playground. Great place for a picnic.
Walk back to Lionel Street turning left and walking around the right-angle to the pedestrian island across Retreat Road. Cross the second pedestrian island onto the footpath. There is a place to feed ducks from the river jetty.
The path leads back to Gloucester Street lights. Cross here turning left into Locksley Avenue. The riverside road leads back to the footbridge opposite Snell Place. Roads in this area are named after famous New Zealand runners: Halberg Street, Lovelock Street and Landy Street.
Dogs are allowed off the leash along the riverbank and at Avon park, except beside the playground.
