Coastal Heritage Trail

Location
Start at the waterfront at Beachville Road, Redcliffs.
Description

This coastal path skirts the lower reaches of the Avon-Heathcote Estuary through Redcliffs and emerges at the open sea at Sumner. It passes several sites of significance to Maori and early European history, many with information panels.

Starting at the waterfront at Beachville Road, Redcliffs, follow Main Road to Moncks Cave at the corner of Cave Terrace. Read how archaeologists have unearthed some of New Zealand’s most significant finds relating to early Maori history. Opposite Wakatu Avenue take the footpath by the water’s edge around Moncks Bay to Shag Rock, a distinctive sea stack. A panel near here features the coastal resources important to Maori. From here you can walk along Sumner Beach to Cave Rock. Cross to the footpath hugging the hillside to learn about more local features and history.
