Kennedy Bush Reserve - Orongomai Trail
- Location
Kennedys Bush Reserve lies at the head of a valley that falls to the west from the crater rim of the extinct Lyttelton volcano. Its bush-clad gullies lie below the Summit Road and descend away from the Harbour towards Halswell. Access to the track is below the Sign of the Bellbird along the Summit Road.
A small car park with space for about 10 cars is sited opposite the Sign of the Bellbird on the eastern side of the reserve along the Summit Road, providing sightseers with excellent views of the Lyttelton Harbour.
- Description
- A grassy track passes in front of the shelter and toilet and comes to a stile at the start of the Orongomai Trail. The track zigzags down through bush past several track junctions. Below the Quarry Track junction the track is rougher and descends to a small stream. The lower part of the reserve has some of the best accessible forest in the Port Hills. At a stream confluence, the track starts climbing up by the second stream, passing by several large totara and matai trees. Continue climbing steadily through predominantly kanuka forest, following signs back to the Sign of the Bellbird.
