Omahu Bush - Kirks-Pendergast Circuit
- Location
Omahu Bush is 20 km from Cathedral Square on the Summit Road and 8-9 km southwest from the Sign of the Kiwi in the Port Hills.
Car parking is available in Gibraltar Rock car park or at Omahu Bush. There is a signpost on the roadside at Omahu Bush with a map of the reserve.
The walk starts from the Omahu Bush car park.- Description
From the Omahu Bush car park, descend Kirks Track through bush, which is given character by the many orange-brown peeling trunks of kotukutuku, the native fuchsia. Good examples of a number of native tree species are labelled. After 5 minutes, cross Rhodes Track and continue the descent into kanuka forest by a small stream. The native regeneration here is profuse. After a junction, climb gradually to meet a wide grassy vehicle track. This is Prendergasts Track, which sidles gradually uphill on open slopes under Gibraltar Rock. At the junction to Gibraltar Rock, complete the circuit by continuing straight ahead on the foot track through bush to the Gibraltar Rock car park. This is only 150 metres along the Summit Road from the starting point, but take care walking around the blind corner.
Circuit with detour to Gibraltar Rock – 2.5 hours.
