The Groynes Recreation Reserve
- Location
- The Groynes is 9 km north-west of Christchurch and the main access is off Johns Road and Groynes Drive – 160 Johns Rd. Well signposted.
- Description
The Groynes derives its name from large blocks, made from concrete filled woolsacks, jutting into the Otukaikino River.
The main track, the Waimairi Walkway, provides a great opportunity for lovers of nature, walkers and joggers to escape the noise of the central city. It covers flat ground and is suitable for people of all levels of fitness, age and mobility.
The Short Loop, 1.5 km, 20 minutes return.
Starting from picnic area one, this walk will lead you alongside the edge of the river as the track winds between trees and native grasses. Crossing over the irrigation channel, pukekos
and other water birds can be seen as the track crosses the suspension bridge back to the picnic area. The Long Loop, 5 km, 90 minutes return.
This walk follows the same track as the shorter walk until you cross the irrigation channel, where they branch off in different directions. The longer walk continues past the canoe area to an old pumphouse, and then follows the riverbank through private farmland before returning via an old orchard to the pumphouse and suspension bridge. It is a good grade until you reach the farmland, when the track becomes less well formed.- Level
