Horseshoe Lake Walk

Location
Car park off Lake Terrace Road 5km from Cathedral Square.
Description

This walk follows Horseshoe Lake, then cuts across quiet streets and returns via the pleasant Woodland Walk.

Well-made paths and boardwalks mean that this track now stays dry even through the winter, and the lakeside is a wonderful place for children to explore and feed the ducks.

From the lakeside car park and toilet, the track crosses the footbridge and follows the inner curve of Horseshoe Lake. The track meanders through groves of willows and along a boardwalk, and there is a thick undergrowth of indigenous plants
such as karamu, cabbage trees, tussock sedges and ferns.

A large variety of waterfowl reside in the Horseshoe Lake Reserve, including mallard duck, Canada goose, grey duck (parera), New Zealand shoveller (kuruwhengi), little shag, welcome swallow, New Zealand scaup (papango) and kingfisher (kotare).

After a while the track reaches a wide grass sward beside the lake, with track turnoffs to Liggins and Parish streets. The Reaby Street turnoff is opposite the lakeside seat, and extensive native planting has been undertaken in this area. There is a track that exits out to the shelter and seats beside New Brighton Road.

However, for the full circuit, follow Reaby Street to
Queensbury Street, turn left to Goodman Street and right along this road to Kingsford Street. Left again very briefly and right into Broomfield Terrace. Shortly the start of the Woodland Walk is signposted. Across the road is Burwood Park with a large children’s playground. The raised gravel track winds through willow groves with many cabbage trees, and there is a footbridge across an old lake outlet. The track skirts farmland and the dog park to arrive back at the car park beside Lake Terrace Road.

For short walk option from the car park: walk on the inner curve of Horseshoe Lake and return, 30 minutes.
