Hoon Hay Scenic Reserve
- Location
- Summit Road. Tracks run down to Governors Bay and Ohinetahi Bush.
- Description
The Crater Rim Walkway traverses the reserve on its way to Ahuriri Reserve from the Sign of the Kiwi. The crater rim of the extinct Lyttelton volcano actually forms the boundary of Hoon Hay Scenic Reserve, and this southern side of the reserve offers some lovely views over the steep bluffs and gullies towards Governors Bay.
Watlings – Faulkners Tracks This walk starts from the car park at the south end of Hoon Hay Reserve. Take the Watlings Track which immediately drops down towards Governors Bay. Turn left at the South Boundary Track junction and sidle through bush gullies to Faulkners Track. Follow this track uphill, zigzagging and passing under bluffs before climbing to meet the Crater Rim Walkway at a stile. Return via the Crater Rim Walkway, or alternatively over the signposted Trig V Track, to complete the circuit.
Cass Ridge – O'Farrells Tracks Take the Cass Ridge Track down a grassy spur, continuing down past the junction with Ellas Track to O’Farrells Track, a vehicle track, Turn left. This sidles the lower slopes, rounding open grassy spurs and dipping into bush gullies. Zigzag up the Bush Road Track, passing junctions with Totara Log Track, South Boundary Track, and Dukes St Track before levelling out and meeting the crater Rim Walkway. Return to the Sign of the Bellbird via the Crater Rim Walkway and Ellas Track. An alternative circuit can be made by returning along the Totara Log Track from Bush Road Track. This sidles, then zigzags up to an outcrop on a spur. Continue on up to meet the Crater Rim Walkway, and then on the the Sign of the Bellbird.
A feature of interest in this reserve is an old hewn milestone erected by the Summit Road Society which can still be seen on the reserve.Area of Park: 17 Hectares
