Bridle Path - Heathcote

Location
Off Bridle Path Road, Heathcote.
Description

Much of the early history of Canterbury centres on the Bridle Path. Beginning at Lyttelton, it crosses the Port Hills, descending into the Heathcote Valley, emerging at what is now the entrance to the Lyttelton road tunnel.

Although a challenging walk, the track is very popular with visitors, not only because of its connections with the early settlement of Canterbury, but also for the tremendous views it provides. Expansive views of the Estuary, New Brighton and the coast as far as the Kaikoura’s are a highlight of the northern half of the route, while excellent views of Lyttelton and the harbour dominate the southern side. At its summit you will see the historic monument to pioneer women.
The path was hacked out of the rock by a working party in 1851. The Bridle Path soon became the main access way for families of pioneers bringing household goods and personal belongings over the Hills. The horses had to be led by the bridle to the Summit – thus the name Bridle Path.

Note: the path is multi-use and includes walkers, runners, mountain bikes and occasional vehicles.
