Wairaka Walkway - Pukerua Bay-Plimmerton
- Location
Pukerua Bay Beach, about 35km north of Wellington. Access to the beach is down Pukerua Bay Beach Road off State Highway 1 just north of Pukerua Bay Shops.
The road narrows part-way down to one lane, so look out for oncoming traffic, rather than taking in the great views. Resist the temptation to park at the bottom of the hill, where turning traffic can be a problem.
Visit www.dayout.co.nz for a good map of this walk.
- Description
Follow the coastline between Pukerua Bay and Plimmerton on this 4.5 hour walk. See the Kaikoura mountains and Mana Island on a clear day. To ensure you have transport home, leave your car at Plimmerton Station and take the train to Pukerua Bay to start the trip.
Of interest along the way are rock pools and a breeding ground for little blue penguins, terns and skinks. Ensure you time the walk for low tide. The beach itself is a mixture of sand and pebbles, and is good for swimming, fishing and paua hunting. Signs indicate how many paua you can take, and how big they should be.
Two sets of toilet blocks are located along the beach front, and there are plenty of picnic tables and bench seats on grassy verges.
