Otaki Forks
- Location
- Otaki Forks is 19km inland from Otaki township – approx. 11/2 hr drive from Wellington or Palmerston North. The easiest turn-off from State Highway 1 is at Otaki Gorge Road, just south of the State Highway 1 bridge over the Otaki River. The last 5km of the Otaki Gorge Road is unsealed, narrow and windy – please drive carefully.
- Description
For a view of Otaki Forks cross the Waiotauru River Swing bridge at Boielle Flat and turn left at the end of the bridge. Follow farm track to top river terrace for view of the forks. Old stone walls were built during the Depression. A steeper return walk is on the far side of the terrace, or link with the Arcus Loop for a longer walk.
Tararua Forest Park is renowned for its changeable weather and, because much of the terrain is rugged, trampers and walkers must travel prepared. Food and warm waterproof clothing should always be carried, even on short walks.
