Mt Kaukau
- Location
- Khandallah park. (Woodmancote Road).
- Description
Mount Kaukau is the highest point overlooking Wellington Harbour. Several walking tracks lead to the summit. The tracks are well formed and the view is worthwhile. One route leads through the Khandallah Reserve, another from Simla Crescent and a side track goes to Johnsonville. The return distance is about 6km. This walk is part of the Northern Walkway.
Near the summit the vegetation features natives and exotics, especially pine and macrocarpa. At 430 metres the walkway becomes farmland and you will see the tower and the lookout. To the east you will see the Rimutaka Ranges, the city and harbour. To the north the Tararua ranges.
To the south Mt Tapuae-o-Uenuku 2885 m mountain in the Kaikoura Ranges is visible. On a hot day this is a great place to retreat for a picnic and a swim. The FREE 30 metre unheated outdoor swimming pool is situated in amongst native bush and has a babies and toddlers area. There is also a great coffee shop within viewing distance of the pool (Café du Park).
