Kowhai Track
- Location
- Start the track from the signpost in Kowhai Street, Muritai.
- Description
The tracks wind up through regenerating bush and mature beech forest offering spectacular harbour views. At the main ridge all tracks descend into Butterfly Creek Valley and on to the well known picnic spot.
The Kowhai Street track gives the easiest access to Butterfly Creek. You follow a zigzag up through regenerating bush, before reaching the main ridge in about twenty minutes. Descend to the valley through the beech forest and passing some of the largest kahikatea in the park. This track intersects with those from MacKenzie Road, Muritai Park and Korohiwa Bay, giving several options for the return trip.
