Aratiatia Rapids Viewpoint

Location

The Aratiatia Rapids are about 10 kilometres north of Taupo on Rapids Road (off Aratiatia Road, off State Highway 5.)

Description

A short track to three lookouts over the Aratiatia Rapids begins 50 metres from the bridge on the true right of the river. The dam's control gates are opened several times a day to allow the rapids to flow – a spectacular sight. Check times with the Taupo Visitor Centre.

The spillway at the Aratitia dam is opened daily at 10:00 am, 12:00 noon, 2:00 pm (winter and summer) and also 4:00 pm in summer to recreate these rapids.
